Laughing Sunrise is an independent design studio run by Artemis Hatfield, a designer & artist from the UK, currently based in Southampton.
Artemis’ areas of expertise include branding, publication, and poster design, but they’re always up for exploring other types of projects and have connections with a network of other creatives for if any part of a project needs an extra set of skills brought in. This could include product/editorial photography, illustration, VFX, animation, and more.
Aberrations Collective
Branding, Publication & Poster Design
Branding Design
Aberrations is an artist collective from Arts Univeristy Bournemouth. I created this brand identity for Aberrations that reflects their bold creativity and diverse range of artistic practices. “Aberration” is a noun that means “ a departure from what is normal, usual, or expected," and in creating this brand identity we looked to reflect that and create something fun, unique, flexible, and exciting.
For the logotype we settled on a combination of two typefaces, Stolzl and Eckmannpsych, which created a contrast between a more formal and traditional typeface, and a psychedelic counter-culture inspired type. This reflects the varied nature of artists within Aberrations, and creates an interesting and dynamic logo.
We also created a variable logo sytem so it could be used flexibly in a variety of contexts.
Exhibition Catalogue Design
For the exhibition, I worked with fellow designer Dan Bowhay on this exhibition catalogue.
We used GF Smith Colourplan paper on the cover, which gave us that vibrant turquiose you can see in the image above. GF Smith papers are renound for their high quality, and they certainly deliver that here. The subtle texture of the paper perfectly complements the halftone in the printed images. The interior pages use Munken Lynx paper, a subtly textured white paper stock.
For the catalogue we worked with PageMasters, a risograph printers based just 20 minutes from the gallery in Lewisham. Risograph printers lay one layer of ink down at a time through a master, which is similar to a screen printing mesh screen, unlike digital printing that deposits ink with nozzles. To acheive the CMYK Print in the catalogue, each page was run through the printer 4 times, creating a beautiful blend of colours and leaving a slight aberration around the edges of colour photographs.
The design style of this catalogue was expanded from the Aberrations Collective branding. The title is derived from the logo exactly, and the body text is set in Stolzl to match the logotype. And, everything is set to an invisble grid to keep elements consistent and clean. On the outside cover we included an image by Liora Goldstein, and the inside cover featured work by Emily Page.
